Believing in I Can

BELIEVING IN I CAN

More often than not, we fall into the routine of second-guessing our capabilities, limiting ourselves from our true potential. The truth is there is power in believing in I can. Don’t cut yourself short; believe that you can and set your sights on attaining that goal.  Personally, my faith has shaped me to believe in the value God created within me. Thus, it is with this value and esteem that I know I can do all things through Him.  This popular topic of knowing your potential could be pages long, but here are 5 simple steps to getting yourself to a place of self-belief.

Believing in I Can

*Disclaimer: I am not a professional, but through much research and my own personal growth these are the steps I have found to be a great basis for believing in one’s true ability.*

  1. Learn from your past, but don’t dwell in it.  We all have stories of our past, some that have positively impacted our lives today and others that we have tried to forget.  However, when we look back on these events we begin to understand how our past shaped who we are.  Our reflection in turn makes us stronger. We become more aware of our behavior and how our personality type handles situations, good or bad. Learning from our past, allows us to reflect on our own perception of ourselves. Maybe you still see yourself as the hard worker who never received proper recognition in school. Or, you recognize that having certain friendships was always vital throughout your life.  Knowing this information about yourself gives you a greater understanding of how you view yourself and what you can achieve.
  2. Turn your dreams into goals and set your goals high.  You dream about one day quitting your day job and working for yourself. You dream about buying your dream home. You dream about putting yourself out there and applying for that promotion.  We all have dreams, some larger than others. These dreams become your goals or these dreams get pushed aside as nonsense – “I’ll never give an acceptance speech at the Oscar’s”. You might! Are you positive that you won’t? Setting your goals in a realistic manner is fine, but give yourself some credit.  If you want to move across the country one day, but you feel as if it will never happen – write it down, make it a goal.  Do you want to start a Youtube Channel and be the next big thing? Make it a goal! Reach for the stars, as the saying goes. Your list of goals is yours. Don’t give anyone else the power to determine what goals you can OR cannot reach in your life.
  3. Create a mental image.  Take a second, close your eyes, and let your mind focus on your goals.  Picture yourself at your fitness goal. See yourself walking into your dream home.  Imagine yourself sitting in your new corner office, helping your employees. Research has shown that images have a large impact on our brain.  By creating an image of our achieved goals, we are more inclined to believe that we will have that success. (Check out this TedTalk, where Layne Beachley talks about creating a picture of holding her trophy and so much more.)
  4. Make your vision a driving force.  Now that you’ve set your goals and have created a positive image for that goal, let your vision guide your path.  This won’t be possible for every goal, but let’s say you want to buy your dream home.  This goal entails tasks like saving funds for a down payment and having good credit to be approved for a loan. So, if your vision is buying your dream home, when the decision comes to spend your bonus on a shopping spree or add it to savings, you’ll ask yourself which choice would get you closer to your goal. Life happens so this is not always possible, but knowing what your vision for your life is helps to shape your everyday life.  It gives you purpose in why you go to work everyday or why this hobby is vital to pursue. It reminds you in your low points that you’re worth it and if you work at it, you will prevail.
  5. Say “I can…” out loud.  This last one is my personal favorite.  I am a firm believer in the power of our words (I’ll talk about this more in a later post).  Our words bring vitality to our thoughts.  If you constantly say you can’t or you’re not good enough, your mind starts to believe that.  Instead say I can buy my dream house, I will get that promotion, I am at my fitness goal. You are WORTH it! Saying it out loud lets these words permeate into your mind and soul. You begin to believe in your ability. You begin to believe in the words “I can”.

My hope is that by using these tools, you will see that you truly are amazing and your potential is expansive. Maybe you’ve tried some of these tips in your life already; I would love to hear all about it and how it impacted your life. Either way, Beauties, believe in I can and know that you’re always worth it.
