Create a Wardrobe You Love

CREATE A WARDROBE YOU LOVE

As I’m writing this I’m thinking about my summer clothes sitting in the garage waiting for the perfect spring day when I pack up my winter items and bring out the summer clothes. I’ve spent the last 3 months incorporating higher end items and trying to buy a few staple pieces rather than lots of trendy items to create a cohesive, inspiring wardrobe. But you should note, you don’t have to have a huge closet with an island in the middle to fall in love with your closet or wardrobe -you just need to be inspired by the clothing you do own. Here are my tips on how to create a wardrobe you love year round.

Create a Wardrobe You Love

1. Let go of worn clothes.

I know that was the college tee you wore all the time to bed or maybe there’s still that stain on it from when your friend made you laugh so hard you spilt your drink. But keeping items that are torn, stained, or worn will make it difficult to feel inspired. Believe me – I’m just as sentimental as the next person. But if you are able to part ways, it may be time to retire it. You can always go buy a replacement item.

2. Pull out clothes that you rarely wear.

Is there a reason you rarely wore that top? Maybe you just never found the right bra to go underneath it. Or, once you brought it home you changed your mind. Either way, take a look at these rarely worn items taking up space in your closet. If you can come up with a plan as to when you will wear the item then by all means keep it. Otherwise, proceed to step 3.

3. Donate or sell items you don’t wear.

If you have rarely worn items and you have decided you have no plan to wear it, consider donating or selling these clothes depending on their condition. Donating and selling both give you the opportunity to bless someone else. I personally will donate my clothes to a particular person I know in need, Goodwill, or sell them to a second hand shop like Plato’s Closet. I find this to be the easiest way to get rid of clothes that are still in good condition -allowing someone else the chance to enjoy that item.

4. Reorganize.

Once you have reduced your wardrobe to only the items in good condition that you wear, the next step is to organize those clothes. Utilizing drawer organizers can be helpful for items that cannot be hung. Otherwise, organize hanging clothes by either type or color. My personal preference: organize by type and then within that section organize by color. It makes it so much easier when you know you want to wear a sleeveless top; just go to that section and take your pick of which color you feel like today!

5. Utilize a closet app.

This is one of my goals for this year. I bought Stylebook in the App Store and love the idea of having all my clothes in one place on my phone. Whether you’re checking to see if you already own a similar dress or maybe you’re relaxing on a Sunday and want to plan out your outfits for the week ahead. It’s so organized- the Type A in me loves this idea! This step is totally up to you, but if you want to have your wardrobe at your fingertips, this might just be the perfect fit.

6. Replenish.

You may have thrown away or donated bags of your clothes and depending on how much clothing you had to begin with, there may be some voids in your wardrobe collection. Take the time to determine what staple pieces you need to repurchase that may have been too worn to continue wearing. If you’re organizing at the cusp of the new season, take the time to research trends and see if anything interests you. You’ve done a great job clearing out and organizing your wardrobe – so Treat Yo’Self!

7. Enjoy Your Wardrobe.

New clothes. Clothes in good condition – nothing torn or stained. A closet organized like a store. An app that brings you back to the Clueless movie closet scene. It is time to enjoy your hard work! And the best part is if you stay on top of your organization weekly- next time you go through your wardrobe, it won’t be such a production.

I hope these tips helped you get inspiration on how to create a wardrobe you love! I’d love to hear any of your ideas or thoughts in the comments below.  Until next time!

♥ Jocelyn

Nice Jocelyn! These tips on reorganizing are very similar to what I just posted about. Although your Stylebook closet app is something I haven’t thought of. I’ll definitely need to look into that.

Thank you! Yes, the Stylebook app is such a great tool to see what is in your closet and how often you wear certain items.

I highly recommend it! I haven’t add every single item from my closet onto the app yet but it’s definitely on my To Do List.

Great post! I have a huge bin of summer sandals that I’ve been putting off on going through. I have so many, I’m making myself purge a few before I can buy any new shoes!

Hi Lydia, it can be such a lifesaver when you’re trying to plan ahead or if you’re about to buy a new shirt and can’t remember if you have something almost identical! Guilty lol
